Nehemiah 2:18 says, “So they said, let us rise up and build. Then they set their hands to this Good work.” Nehemiah was going to rise up and build the wall of Jerusalem. But what I want you to think about is how we can rise up and build the church and ourselves.
Before you help build up the church, you need to make sure you've built yourself up as a Christian. How do we do that? First, we must do what Luke 9:23-24 tells us to do. Here it says, “Then he said to them all. If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself. Take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.” This verse is telling us that we need to give our lives to Jesus in order to follow him. The next thing we need to do is make sure we are setting a good example. In 1 Timothy 4:12 it says, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” So are you being an example for others as it says here in 1 Timothy? Are you willing to sacrifice your life to follow Jesus, as it says in Luke chapter 9? If you are, then it's time to start thinking about how you can help build up the church.
What are some ways we can build up the church? Matthew 28:19 says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Jesus is saying we need to go out and teach people about him. We need to try to bring as many people as we can to Jesus. Another way we can build up the church is by encouraging those who are already Christians. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 says, “Therefore comfort each other and edify one another just as you also are doing.” Are you building up yourself, as well as the church? All these verses and more tell us how we can do this. We have all the information we need. Now it's up to us to take advantage of our opportunities.
